Summer Reading and Response for Entering 6th Graders

Task: Read two (2) books from the Reading List over the summer. The list is posted online, below, and was distributed during school. Write one (1) reading response. Use the outline below to guide your response.

Purpose: Choose one of the books, from the list, that you read this summer. Write in ink or type a three paragraph summary, use the planning page to assist you in your writing.

The response must include the following:

  • Title, name of the author, setting( when, where)
  • Identify the main character in the story
  • Identify 2 character traits of this character and examples from the story
  • Describe one problem this character faces in the book and tell how the problem was solved
  • Tell the reader what you learned from the character's problem
  • Give your personal reaction to the book

This assignment and planning page are due the first day of class, September 2010.

Complete the following before you write your response. Download the sheet using the link above.

  1. Title
  2. Author
  3. Setting (when and where?)
  4. Identify a major character, and his or her name, character traits and examples of these traits.
  5. Briefly discuss one problem this character faces in the book.
  6. State the theme/moral/ or message of the book. Make sure to include supporting evidence.
  7. Give your personal reaction to this book.
