Contemporary Fiction Book Group

Tuesday, December 10, 2019 - 10:00am to 11:00am

The Contemporary Fiction Book Group will be reading and discussing The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead on December 10, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Field Library Gallery.

The Nickel Boys, winner of the Kirkus Prize and longlisted for the National Book Award, follows the horrifying experiences of Elwood Curtis, an African American young man sent to a hellhole of a juvenile "reformatory" in the Jim Crow era South. Elwood struggles to hold onto the ideals of Martin Luther King, while his friend, Turner, believes the world is crooked and the only way to survive is to avoid trouble whenever possible. Their lives, their futures, are shaped by their experiences in this school, based on a real life reform school in Florida.

Copies of the book are available at the Circulation Desk.
