Field Notes Book Group

Saturday, September 21, 2019 - 11:00am

Join the Field Notes Book Group on Saturday, September 21, from 11 to 12:30 at the Teen Zone in the Field Library for coffee, snacks and a lively discussion of this month's book, Heartland: a Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the RIchest Country on Earth by Sarah Smarsh.  Copies of the book will be available at the Circulation Desk.

While most Americans visualize poverty as something that's limited to inner cities, in fact most poor people live in rural areas in America's heartland.  Smarsh writes vividly about her youth and teenage years on a farm in Kansas, experiencing abusive relationships, unsafe working conditions, inadequate medical and dental care, and a lack of resources to enable anyone to move up and into a better place, looking at the factors that keep rural people mired in poverty here in the United States.

Coffee and refreshments will be available. Come and join us for what should be a most interesting discussion.
