Winter: Darkness and Light

December 1, 2018 – January 14, 2019

Opening Reception: Saturday, December 8, 2018 1-4 pm

Peekskill Arts Alliance Members  -- employing mediums including painting, photography, mixed media, wall sculpture and printmaking --   will interpret Winter: Darkness and Light, in a curated group show presented by The Peekskill Arts Alliance and The Field Gallery. Opening on December 1st and running  through January 14, 2019, the exhibit gives artists the opportunity to deconstruct their traditions and re-examine the cultural significance of the season  --- including the time- honored customs of holiday and family -- in addition to  opposing emotions of melancholia, spiritlessness, and ennui.

“There is mythology in all cultures about the dark of winter and the traditions that grew from it. The yule log is an outgrowth of the Druid grandfather log, harvested the year before, and  lit on the darkest night of the year: the winter solstice. When the log has become ash, a new log is chosen for the next year. It was a reminder that light would again come and a show of faith that it would happen. The holidays all celebrate this light over the darkness.,” explains curator Mara Mills.

Whether a time of joy, sorrow, contemplation, rebirth, or awakening, Winter: Darkness and Light is a testament to the power of art in expressing often conflicting emotions on a season both luminous and somber.

Curators include Peekskill Arts Alliance board members: artist Larry D’Amico, Studio Theater In Exile director Mara Mills, and Field Gallery curator Alicia Morgan.  Artwork will be for sale throughout the exhibit with a portion of proceeds benefiting the PAA and The Field Library.
